AUTUMN ESSENTIALS

flatautumn
I decided to do a little post on my Autumn essentials, any excuse for a flatly eh? I feel like such a blogger haha I sort of wish I had a photo of me standing over the items with my legs spread, so sophisticated. There are numerous things that spring to mind when I think of Autumn, most of which I have included here. The nights are getting darker and colder and this means more cosy nights in under a blanket watching TV or a classic film like Hocus Pocus with your friends! It also means more hot drinks, berry lips and pumpkin spice everything.

Around this time of year i have to start looking after my hands a lot more. They very easily get dry and start cracking (yummy) so I will always have one in my handbag, one next to my bed and one where I work next to my laptop. If you can get one that’s sweet cinnamon scented too, you’re in autumnal heaven every time you apply it. Autumn also see’s the rise in the number of baths I have. I’m definitely a bath person in the evenings. I like to shower in the mornings to wake up and feel fresh, but I like baths a couple of times a week where I can just soak and relax with different bath fizzers, oils and bubble bath. Whilst soaking in the bath it’s nice to burn a candle too. In fact, I burn cosy candles from around the end of August in pure anticipation of the colder months. Yes, i’m lame. I also have Christmas music playing whilst I type this, judge away (or nod enthusiastically). Let’s face it though, there is nothing more pleasing than relaxing with a gorgeously yummy candle flickering away beside you when it’s dark and gloomy outside.
fa4
One makeup trend I absolutely love that trickles in around Autumn time, is dark berry toned lips. I always think a classic red is good too, maybe even a slighter deeper tone than usual. It’s all very vampy and seductive (something i’m not, but I do think I pull off a berry toned lip pretty well, if I say so myself). I have a selection of my favourite lipsticks here that I think are perfect for this time of year. A lot of which are a little more on the pricey side, but I’m giving you permission to indulge and treat yourself, because you deserve it *points vigorously*. Tom Ford lipsticks are actually something I’m starting to get a bit obsessed with at the moment and I find my little stash becoming not-so-little. This one is called Cherry Red and I feel like it’s a colour that most people should own. It’s gorgeous and it’s classic! Tom Ford lipsticks are also great quality and feel very special. The next one down is my trusty (and a little bit grubby, I like to say well-loved) YSL Rouge Pur Couture Matte in 205! This shade is one that I wear all the time. It’s very long lasting and the colour payoff is very good. Love, love, love. Then it’s my beloved Charlotte Tilbury Glastonbury, I don’t need to say much on this because if you know me at all, then you’ll know that nine times out of ten, if i’m wearing a berry lip, no, in fact if i’m wearing any lipstick at all, it’s probably this. Next is the Burberry lipstick in Oxblood, and yes, you’d be right in saying it looks the exact same as the ones above it, but you can never have too many options! Then for my slightly more budget friendly option which is Kiko Intensely Lavish Lipstick in 04. This one is a slightly more pink berry tone, just to add a bit of variation! Also a lovely lipstick!
fa6
Alongside the lipsticks, I also think gold eyes pair perfectly. I have my gorgeous friend Tanya Burr’s Hollywood eyeshadow palette which has every shade you could ever need for the perfect gold smokey eye. There’s also no harm in going dark and vampy on the nails either, which is why I love Butter London’s Ruby Murray which is a gorgeous deep shade of plum. You’ll also notice I have included here, a cosy blanket for sofa snuggles, my Topshop fedora and some super comfy over the knee socks which look so super cute with skirts and boots and keep your legs warm!
fa7
WARM DRINKS! As someone who doesn’t drink traditional cups of tea or coffee and relies solely on hot chocolate and flavoured tea, I feel like this is the time of the year where I finally fit in. There are so many options for flavoured teas and of course the pumpkin spice makes an appearance and my goodness does it taste good (try it with hot chocolate, sounds weird but if you don’t drink coffee and you’re in Starbucks and you still want to experience the spicy goodness, it tastes GREAT). Speaking of hot chocolate, GU do an amazing salted caramel hot chocolate which I found in the milk section of Waitrose and I HAVE HONESTLY NEVER TASTED ANYTHING LIKE IT. Even writing this my mouth is salivating and I need another cup of it immediately. Then you have the classic pumpkin spice flavoured tea which is also delicious and really warms the cockles on a dreary day! Bluebird Tea Company do this amazing one with loose leaf tea bags which I would totally recommend you try.
fa9
And last but by no means least, cosy nights in with friends where you end up snacking on every cheese flavoured biscuit and all the chocolate you can find in the house (i.e. the best kind of nights). We often do these nights at our house where I will lay a blanket over each person (hostess with the most-ess), top up their drinks and provide snacks as well as choose a film to snuggle down to. Followed of course by selfies on a disposable camera to keep the memories! I feel like Autumn see’s a lot more of these nights and they make me so incredibly happy. What are your Autumn Essentials? Do you have any film recommendations for all the cosy nights i’m going to be having over the next few weeks?

BEST OF BEAUTY ADVENT CALENDARS 2015

It’s that time of the year again where the advent calendars line the shelves in the supermarkets and when buying your weekly bits and pieces you have a light hearted debate with your other half about which chocolate calendar is the best. I’m definitely a Cadburys & Thorntons girl, where as Alfie is more of a Lindt kind of guy. Around two years a go we saw the rise of beauty advent calendars and now each year there are so many to chose from it’s almost an impossible decision. If you aren’t familiar with a beauty advent calendar, behind each door up until Christmas you are met with travel (and some times full) sized products that you can try out and use. Definitely a little more long lasting than the chocolate that’s for sure. It’s a great pre-christmas gift or treat and also a nice way to discover new brands and products you might not have discovered otherwise. I’m going to give you a brief run down of some of the calendars I’ve got my hands on this year, and don’t worry, I don’t give away the entire contents, only a few sneak peeks. I don’t want to be ruining the surprise for you!

Selfridges is a great place to start if you want something a little more luxury. It includes brands such as Khiel’s, Lancome & Giorgio Armarni and includes a great mixture of skincare and makeup. I love the design of this and it feels super sturdy. The only downside to this is that I feel it has a lot of the same brands and considering Selfridges beauty hall is like a makeup and skincare heaven, I was hoping for there to be a bit more variety and a few more full sized items. I bought one of these for my mum as I knew she would love it and that she would like the brands included in it so I’m excited to see what she thinks! I believe this particular calendar may be sold out now, but there is an alternative on the website!

Ciate are also well known now for having an advent calendar every year for the nail lovers. I personally love ciate polishes and when they are in mini form, they are even better. I don’t know about you but I find them easier to take away, easier to store and I never finish a full size nail polish. If you, or someone you know loves to paint their nails or doesn’t have much of a collection, this is the perfect starter kit (or everything you’ll ever need kit). The selection of colours are amazing and there are some loose glitters thrown in there for the creatives too! The packaging of this is adorable, it’s a little London scene in winter.

I thought this calendar was definitely worth mentioning as it’s by the brand Kerastase who are known for their premium haircare. It’s jam packed with mini shampoos, treatments and post-wash products PERFECT for trying out and taking away with you in your wash bag. I liked that the doors had the foiling silhouette on them so you get an idea of what might be behind it. I do think this is aimed more towards people who get excited by hair products  and I know that isn’t all of us but it’s a great introduction to the brand and the products they have!

I was VERY excited to see this little gem in my PO Box! Charlotte Tilbury is a brand that I love everything about, so seeing that she had released a calendar made me very happy. Unlike many of the others however, this only takes you up to day twelve, which I don’t see as a negative at all, as it’s about the products you receive inside. At £150 this is on the slightly more pricey side, and is up there with the Liberty calendar which is only £1 cheaper than this one. Having only peeped at a few of the boxes so I didn’t spoil it for myself, I was happy with the selection of products that I saw. There is a good mixture of makeup and skincare in travel sizes and a full sized lipstick. You all know how much I love a Charlotte Tilbury lipstick! I definitely see this as a little treat or a nice gift for anyone who is really into Charlotte Tilbury or who you know would love it but has yet to try anything. It feels very special, if you know what I mean?

This one appears to be the best value for money of all the calendars! At only £59.95 for so many amazing brands, including Philip Kingsley, Burts Bees, Nuxe & Pixi it really is VERY exciting. It also includes a lot of variety and quite a few full sized products too! This is one of the few that I am REALLY very excited to open in December.

advent8advent7
This is on par with the YouBeauty in terms of variation of brands! There are so many amazing ones nestled away in this advent calendar including Eve Lom, Molten Brown and Rimmel . The box itself is so beautiful and alongside the Liberty Calendar is my favourite. It looks like a big fairytale storybook and even has a little poem on the back that made me smile! This too has some full sized products and I would honestly recommend this one to everyone. It’s a good medium price bracket (for a beauty calendar) and the quality is on par with some of the higher priced ones. I almost don’t want to open it and ruin it!
advent9
This is a great alternative for non-beauty lovers. I wanted to share this one as I found it a really cool concept. In each day you receive silver or gold plated jewellery including plain chains & charms, earrings and rings! I was a little apprehensive as to whether or not the jewellery would be something I would wear and I would honestly say that 90% of the stuff was so pretty and went straight into my jewellery box. The only downside to this was I felt the actual packaging was quite flimsy and I struggled to neatly open any of the doors, however the products themselves were splendid!
advent6advent5
The Body Shop was one of the first brands I can remember doing Beauty Advent Calendars and every year I have had one! I love the Body Shop and I feel that they have something for everyone and the choice and fragrances are extensive. Full of a great variety of travel sized products. I personally love this calendar. I like all their mini products as they’re great for when you go away. Although mostly skincare there is also a couple of makeup bits but it’s definitely one for The Body Shop lovers out there. You’ll end up smelling divine throughout the month of December.
advent4advent3
My beautiful friend Tanya Burr brought out a 12 days of Christmas calendar this year alongside lot’s of her new makeup range. As this is only for 12 days out of the month, you could chose to open it every other day up until the 24th or for the first or last 12 days (depending on how good your patience is). This is the cheapest advent calendar in the whole blog post and includes full sized products and eye shadows that can only be purchased within this calendar, meaning it’s great value for money! I also absolutely love the design, it’s so cute.
lib2lib1
The most luxurious calendar of the whole bunch is this Liberty one! It looks absolutely gorgeous and it almost takes your breath away when you hold it in your hands. The design is exquisite and delicate and it feels extremely polished. The brands inside include Diptyque, Aromatherapy Associates & Nars plus many more that are just as exciting. Again this is up there with the best diversity in terms of brands and types of products and if you can shell out the £149 as a December treat then it’s totally worth it, especially as the value comes to over £400.

Yankee Candle Reindeer Carousel Advent Calendar – £31.99
One for my fellow candle lovers out there, the Yankee candle advent calendar! Including tealights and votives this calendar offers some of Yankee candles most festive scents for each day leading up to Christmas, including my new favourite scent Candy Cane Lane. Although I’m not a HUGE fan of the design, I love the shape and it definitely feels Christmassy. It’s also a great price and a good way to sample the scents without splashing out on the bigger jars!

In conclusion, this year is definitely the best year for choice with beauty advent calendars and there is no doubt that many people will be opening these doors every day with excitement and surprise. It’s all down to personal preference when it comes to choosing one, but hopefully this has enlightened you and given you a bit of guidance. So whether you want to stick to your chocolate calendar or switch it up for something different, the choice in endless. I now have A LOT of calendars to share out among my friends and family…and I still need to pick up my trusty Cadburys one too!

PICNIC PARTY

picnic party 23
If you have followed me here on my blog or youtube channels for a while, you will know how much I love to throw a shindig. Whether that’s to celebrate someone else’s big day or just the weather and being with friends, there is nothing I love more than putting energy into making it special. When the sunny weather draws in around this time of year here in the UK, the picnic blankets get washed, the hampers get pulled out of the attic and people congregate in fields and their gardens to eat, drink and be merry. We had a lovely bout of heat recently so I decided to throw a picnic, but not just any old picnic (it is me after all), I threw what I have decided to call “A picnic party”. I enlisted Poppy’s help and after a few flicks through my many pinterest boards, with shopping list in hand, we got to work on making it the most perfect picnic we could. Just a little tip here, but before planning any event or party, pinterest is the best place to go for inspiration, cute little DIYS and food ideas, so if you haven’t got an account, I would strongly urge you to get one for all your online scrapbooking needs. The reason I’ve decided to call this a Picnic Party is because it was actually a dusk/evening get together rather than it being in the middle of the day. I decided to do it at this time because I knew the sunset would feel so cosy and I wanted it to have the added touches like fairy lights, candles and throws too. It was also a great time for people to join after they’d finished work and that also meant dinner was sorted. You get the best of both worlds by inviting people around 5 – 6pm, the gorgeous summer light and the cosy sunset glow. The only bit we didn’t really think about was leaving in complete darkness with no torches (thank heavens for the torch on iPhones – that is, if you still have battery by this point).

The Location
There is no better place than your back garden, you have easy access to a toilet, electricity for charging your phone and a place to go if it all goes wrong or everyone get’s too cold. You also have the option of going to a field which is where you can get a bit more specific and it feels a little more like a picnic. I remember traipsing for what felt like miles with my friends and my picnic basket in hand, on the hottest day of the year in an attempt at finding the perfect spot. You can also go on the hunt for a good tree if you chose to do something similar to what we did. Stealing a parent or a friends garden that might be a bit bigger and better than yours is also a great alternative, you might just have to bat your eyelashes nicely or invite them down to join you in exchange! The location is completely up to you, the only thing I really wanted to make sure we had, was a good tree to sit underneath.

The Set Up
I decided to try and create a tree-pi (tree tipi) so I ordered 10 meters of plain white fabric from amazon. You can get this so cheap, and even play around with different colours and fabrics if you want to get a bit fancy. If the tree you’re choosing to sit beneath has quite a low, horizontal branch you might just be able to sling your fabric over that. However we couldn’t do that, so instead we used a hollow pole (it was actually part of a backdrop stand I had) and pushed some rope through it, creating something that hung neatly that we could then put our fabric over. Just be aware you could need someone tall to help you with this, or a step ladder. The other alternative you have is using a washing line from one tree to another and throwing fabric over that. It’s a little bit of trial and error and it feels as though you’re young again and trying to create the best den you’ve ever sat in. I then used clips around the back to ensure the fabric made a backdrop to the tree-pi rather than it feeling more exposed. I put blankets and throws down inside the tree-pi to create the floor, an empty cardboard box that we’d packed picnic essentials into created the table in the middle and I scattered cushions in there for added comfort.

The Decoration
Here is where you could stop, throw down your sandwiches and tuck in but I didn’t want to half-ass this job and my pinterest vision hadn’t quite been quenched. I ordered lots of paper decorations and using the step ladder we managed to hang some from the tree branches. I hung some bunting inside the tree-pi and added a star garland to the front too. We brought along some battery powered wire fairy lights (these come in so handy for so many things), some lanterns and a selection of candles too for when the evening started drawing in. We also bought a bunch of flowers and a handful of old food jars so we could make tiny flower arrangements which gave it a cute and personal touch. To further personalise the picnic, I also decorated a chalk board too! Decoration is definitely more of a personal choice and it really depends on the occasion. I like to make the effort regardless of how many people or the occasion, but pushing the boat out might just be more up your street if it’s someones birthday for example, and that’s totally fine too, I’m aware i’m probably the minority haha.

The Food
Here is the part I know you’re all the most excited about (if you’re reading this hungry that is). If you have a lot of time, or you want to be quite specific, you can prepare everything from home and bring it with you in Tupperware boxes. Poppy actually made two amazing salads and brought these with her, along with some incredibly delicious and very pretty elderflower ice lollies which she made over on her blog so be sure to check those out. I also put together some fruit kebabs which were SO EASY and looked so visually pleasing. We did a mixture of both make ourselves and buy in packets. There really is no right or wrong way. For a lot of people, a picnic isn’t a picnic without buying bags of crisps, punnets of fruit and sausage rolls from the supermarket. We went to Marks and Spencer where they have an amazing summer range of food at the moment (sounds like a spon…isn’t a spon). They have everything you could ever need and MORE. In fact, it’s pretty clear to see in the photos, we definitely over ordered but my fridge was really quite chuffed about that, so it’s fine. We made sure we had a selection of food that everyone would like. We did a cheese board, we had multiple types of salad, fruit and even a wobbly jelly surrounded by summery macarons. I think picnic food, besides a traditional summer BBQ, is my favourite! We also bought a selection of different drinks, both soft and alcoholic. If the weather was a little warmer, we might have even cracked out the pimms (not that I drink personally, but I know it’s a favourite among many people when the suns out). I also bought a plastic drink dispenser and filled it with still lemonade, lemons, lime, mint and ice and it went down a treat, whilst sitting looking pretty on the side.

The Entertainment
Not that having your friends there isn’t entertaining enough but it’s nice to have the option of a couple of games. I took along a few “Guess the song” and “awkward questions” type card games and these went down well for an extra giggle. We also took a portable BlueTooth Speaker so we could listen to some Spotify playlists – I would say this is a picnic MUST HAVE as music really sets the scene. I also took my instant camera so we could take some photos but disposable ones would be fun too! Especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion.

The Bare Necessities
These are things that are essential in order for your picnic to run as smoothly as possible with no hiccups. Picnic Blankets are a pretty obvious one, but I can’t even tell you the amount of times i’ve had to sit on a coat at a picnic. Torches are essential if you’re planning an evening picnic as packing up to go home in the dark is a lot harder than you think it might be. Lighters/Matches in order to light your candles. Bin Bags for throwing away packaging or using to carry things home. Plastic Glasses for drinking out of – you could use glass ones, but they’re heavier, bulkier and more prone to smash causing you a massive hassle. Picnic Bakset is again a pretty obvious one but I wanted to say here that the best one I have ever had is my Fortnum & Mason one. Granted this is not the cheapest option, but it is the perfect size for everything and easy to carry. Cutlery (plastic or metal) – If you forget this you’re screwed! Serving Spoons is something i’ve forgotten a fair few times but you want something that people can use to spoon the food onto their plates. Serving Platters like wooden, slate or marble boards are handy for laying out the food, look good and are easy to wash afterwards rather than millions of small plates. Plates to eat the food from – I bought the cutest little tea plates from M&S! Throws/Wraps for evening chill – Everyone will love you for this one. Portable Phone Charger – We all know how much you’ll be snapchatting and tweeting about the occasion so it’s best you have some form of extra charge. Scissors – A MUST! 1 Sharp Knife for cutting cheese or other bits of food that require a bit more oomph. Little tip, wrap the sharp knife in a tea towel for safe transportation. Napkins! Wet Wipes for grubby hands. Straws for the drinks. Citronella Candles if it’s a particularly warm evening and you’re joined by any six legged friends with wings etc. Tupperware boxes to take home anything that might not get eaten!
picnic party 27picnic party 18
I’m absolutely desperate to do this again already, it was one of the nicest evenings i’ve had so far this year and it was made extra special by being spent with friends. We ate, danced, chatted, drank and laughed. It was the perfect evening. The good thing about this being a picnic, is that you don’t have to splash out on all of this yourself and you can ask guests to bring food, blankets or anything I may have mentioned above in order to pull it all together nicely and successfully.
